Environment
Yvelines is home to the Château of Versailles, which boasts more than six million visitors making it one of the principal tourist attractions in France. The second leading tourist site is the Château of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Six towns have royal town status. Outside Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the town of Poissy pre-dates its neighbours Saint Louis, Mantes-la-Jolie, Marly-le-Roi and Rambouillet. Visitors can explore several châteaux, former royal residences or the homes of well-connected powerful families. The most famous are: Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Rambouillet, Breteuil, Maisons-Laffitte, and Thoiry. In addition, there are a few far older fortresses, such as the Château de la Madeleine at Chevreuse.
