The second leading tourist site is the Château of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Six towns have royal town status. Outside Versailles and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the town of Poissy pre-dates its neighbours Saint Louis, Mantes-la-Jolie, Marly-le-Roi and Rambouillet. Visitors can explore several châteaux, former royal residences or the homes of well-connected powerful families. The most famous are: Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Rambouillet, Breteuil, Maisons-Laffitte, and Thoiry. In addition, there are a few far older fortresses, such as the Château de la Madeleine at Chevreuse.
